Mass NOW Chapter Meeting: Childcare for All

April 29 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Mass NOW members, join our monthly chapter meetings to hear updates on our legislative agenda and participate in consciousness raisings with our diverse, multi-generational feminist community. Over dessert and wine, we strengthen our personal narratives and educate our communities about our priority issue areas. No expertise necessary!

This month we’ll be talking about the movement to make childcare for all a reality, here in Massachusetts.

Ensuring truly affordable and accessible childcare was one of Mass NOW’s top priorities before the pandemic, three of our priority bills are about childcare. We already knew child care is the single biggest barrier to gender equity in the workplace and our childcare system is in crisis:
  • Massachusetts is the least affordable state for child care for infants ($20,125 annually) and toddlers ($18,586 annually), and among the least affordable states for four-year-old care ($14,256).
  • Family childcare homes in Massachusetts have declined by 25.3% since 2010, resulting in fewer choices for working parents and less of the lowest-cost care.
Childcare providers are overwhelmingly women, women of color, immigrants, small business owners – working from their home. Salaries were already low, and now many are having a hard time applying for federal assistance programs.
  • Massachusetts salaries are around $30,000 for child care workers and $38,000 for preschool teachers.
It’s even worse around the country. A recent survey of child care centers and homes, conducted by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), found that just 11 percent of providers could survive a closure of an indeterminate length of time without government support—and only 27 percent could survive a closure of a month.
Traditionally childcare is an ‘issue’ literally and figuratively hidden at home. Now that we are in a pandemic and social distancing we need you to join us in making childcare PUBLIC!
