Mass NOW members, join our monthly chapter meetings to hear updates on our legislative agenda and participate in consciousness raisings with our diverse, multi-generational feminist community. Over dessert and wine, we strengthen our personal narratives and educate our communities about our priority issue areas. No expertise necessary!

This month we’ll be talking about the need to teach consent & sexual health in schools across Massachusetts. Mass NOW is committed to a society in which young people have the information and tools necessary to make informed choices about their own bodies, without stigma. Unfortunately, many Massachusetts schools do not teach sex education in a medically accurate, inclusive way.

As demonstrated by numerous studies, comprehensive sex education programs have proven to not only reduce reported levels of bullying towards LGBTQ youth in school, but also to delay the initiation of sex, increase the use of condoms and contraception, and lower the rates of STIs and unintended pregnancy among teens.

The Healthy Youth Act would create a basic standard that would provide necessary guidance for local decisions to be made about sex education curricula, while leaving the final decision to the community. 10+ years since it’s original filing, the bill has still not passed the Massachusetts legislature.
